Purrmore Tip: Help Cats and Dogs Live Together Safely

Social media is overflowing with feel-good videos and pictures of inter-species friendship and affection. Unfortunately, this can be misleading. It is possible for animals of different species to live together safely or even in harmony, but it requires some work and careful attention to detail.

The most common pairings are cats and dogs. If you have a dog and plan to bring home a new cat, or you are a cat parent considering adopting a dog, there are steps that you can take to ensure your pets live together safely. It does not guarantee that they will become best buddies, but if they do, you will be congratulated for your hard work and compensated with many cute cat and dog photos. If that happens, make sure to share them with us!

  1. Carefully match their personalities - A rambunctious kitten may not be the best match for a senior dog, and a playful puppy may not be welcomed by a laid-back cat. Consider your current pet’s past experience, health, and personality, and find a pet that is likely to go along.

  2. Modify their environment with safety in mind. Make sure your cat has plenty of options for safely stepping away and your dog doesn’t get to sample the cat’s food or litter. This handout from Fear Free has more information.

  3. Slowly introduce your pets using positive training - Be prepared for a slow introduction that may take some time. Your cat and dog will learn important skills that will set them up for success. This article from Pam Johnson-Bennett provides a step-by-step guide.
